Waveguide Components

Waveguide carries RF signals through a hollow metal structure with lower insertion loss and higher power handling than coaxial at frequencies where conductor loss in coaxial becomes limiting. It is the standard transmission medium in high power radar, satellite uplink, and millimeter wave systems. MCLI’s waveguide component line covers 0.75 to 60 GHz across four product types: waveguide isolators (ISW series), waveguide circulators (CSW series), coaxial-to-waveguide adapters, and waveguide terminations.

All components are built to full waveguide band specifications with VSWR as low as 1.15:1, pressure sealing available to 30 PSI, and flange options covering standard and MIL-spec configurations. Custom frequency bands, body materials, and mechanical packages are available on request.

High Power Radar Transmitter Paths

Waveguide feed systems carry transmitter output power levels that coaxial cannot handle at X-band and above. Waveguide isolators in the transmit path absorb reflected power from antenna load changes, protecting the transmitter output stage. Waveguide terminations rated for very high power handle the energy routed to terminated ports without damaging reflections back into the system.

Satellite Uplink and Ground Station Systems

Ku-band and Ka-band ground stations use coaxial-to-waveguide adapters to transition from the coaxial output of a high power amplifier into the waveguide feed to the dish. When Should I Use Waveguide Instead of Coaxial?

Waveguide is the better choice when insertion loss in coaxial becomes significant at your operating frequency and power level, typically above 6 to 8 GHz in longer runs, and wherever power handling requirements exceed what coaxial connectors can safely carry. Below those thresholds, coaxial is simpler and more practical.

What Is the Difference Between a Waveguide Isolator and a Waveguide Circulator?

A waveguide circulator is a three-port non-reciprocal device that routes signals in one defined direction between ports. A waveguide isolator is a circulator with the third port internally terminated, creating a two-port device that passes forward signals with low loss and absorbs reverse-traveling signals. Use a circulator when you need three-port signal routing; use an isolator when you need source protection in a two-port path.
