Adjustable RF Phase Shifters

RF phase shifters shift the phase of a signal passing through them without changing its frequency. MCLI’s adjustable phase shifter line covers DC to 40 GHz with a continuously variable 0° to 360° range, insertion loss as low as 0.5 dB, average power handling up to 100 watts, and peak power handling up to 3,000 watts. Phase slope adjusts at 30° to 60° per GHz depending on the model, with SMA Female and 2.92mm Female connector options across the line.

These are passive analog devices with no active control circuitry. Phase is adjusted mechanically, making them suitable for bench setups, antenna feed network alignment, reflection phase shifter circuits, and any application requiring a stable, manually set phase offset in a 50 ohm signal path.

Where MCLI Phase Shifters Are Used

Antenna Feed Network Alignment

Phase shifters trim the phase of individual elements in an antenna array or feed network to correct for cable length differences, mechanical tolerances, or deliberate phase offsets required for beam steering. Manually adjusted passive phase shifters are the standard tool for this work in both initial alignment and field calibration of phased array and multi-element antenna systems.

Reflection Phase Shifter Circuits

When paired with a 90° hybrid coupler, a phase shifter terminating one output port creates a reflection phase shifter circuit that produces a phase-shifted output at the hybrid’s isolated port. This technique generates continuous or switched phase shifts with low insertion loss and is used in transmit/receive module design and beam forming network development.

Test Bench Phase Offset

Bench setups that characterize phase-sensitive components or verify receiver phase balance use an in-line phase shifter to introduce a known, stable phase reference between instruments. The MCLI line’s low insertion loss, as low as 0.5 dB, keeps the phase shifter’s own contribution to system loss minimal.

Frequently Asked Questions: Phase Shifters

What Does Phase Slope Mean and How Do I Use It to Select a Model?

Phase slope is the rate at which the phase shift changes with frequency, expressed in degrees per GHz. A phase shifter with a 40° per GHz slope produces 40° more phase shift at 10 GHz than it does at 9 GHz at the same mechanical setting. For narrowband applications, this variation across the band is small enough to ignore. For wideband applications, select a model whose phase slope produces acceptable phase variation across your operating bandwidth, or compensate for the slope in your system design.

What Is the Difference Between a Phase Shifter and a Time Delay Unit?

A phase shifter produces a phase offset that is fixed in degrees at a given mechanical setting, meaning the electrical delay changes with frequency. A true time delay unit produces a constant time delay in nanoseconds regardless of frequency, so the phase shift it produces scales linearly with frequency. For narrowband applications, the distinction is minor. For wideband phased array beam steering, true time delay is required to avoid beam squint, which is the shift in beam pointing angle that occurs when a phase-only steered array is used over a wide bandwidth.

Can MCLI Phase Shifters Handle High Power Levels?

Yes. The line supports average power up to 100 watts and peak power up to 3,000 watts, which covers most radar and communications transmit chain applications that use passive phase shifters for feed network alignment. Contact MCLI for guidance on derating at specific frequencies or duty cycles above the rated average power.

Does MCLI Offer Custom Phase Shifters?

Yes. Custom designs are available for frequency ranges, phase ranges, connector types, and power levels outside the standard catalog. Contact MCLI engineering with your specifications to begin a custom inquiry.
